Student Loan Debt

Cumulative student loan debt refers to the total debt incurred while a student attends a specific institution. Specifically, the debt figures include debt from federal, state and private sources that is known to the institution while the student was in attendance. Cumulative debt is only reported for students that completed a subbaccalaureate certificate or degree at the given institution. Debt incurred from previous institutions is not included. Additionally, students with no debt are not included in the median. Student loan debt has become a growing issue of concern not just nationally, but in Minnesota as well. Borrowing for postsecondary education nationally has increased by 89 percent over a 10-year time period from 2004 to 2014. During this same time period, there was a 77 percent increase in the average balance size of borrowers. Locally, Minnesota ranked fifth in the nation in average student debt, while ranking third in the percentage of students holding debt (70 percent).

Identify the percentage of graduates with student loans and their median cumulative student loan debt by degree level, institution type, and institution. The data are divided into three heat map colors based on quartiles allowing the user to graphically sort the data.
